Mystery surrounds strange marbled markings spotted in iceberg off the Antarctic
A Norwegian sailor has discovered strange marbled markings in an iceberg off the Antarctic.
Oyvind Tangen was aboard a research vessel when he noticed the unusual black lines striped through the ice block.
Tangen, 62, grabbed his camera to take these remarkable photographs of the piece so it could be investigated.

He said: “It reminds me of striped candy I bought as a child.
“The iceberg was about 50 metres long and nine metres high.”
A couple of days later, the ship came across another striped iceberg with a striking diagonal blue line through it, which towered about 30 metres above the ocean surface.

Tangen, who was aboard the ship G O Stars, added: “We are not sure how the stripes in these icebergs were formed.
“It is a bit of a mystery if anyone can help with that.
“Some people believe the lines were formed because of different rates of ice compression over the years.
“Other scientists think it is due to trapped mineral debris in the glacier which breaks apart in the ocean.
“I thought they made a beautiful photograph and I was fascinated by it. That’s why I took it.”
The approximate position of these sightings was 600south/150east which is roughly 1700 miles south of Cape Town, South Africa, and 660 miles north of the Antarctic continental shelf.
Tangen, who is still at sea, passed on the images to a relative who posted them on the internet for people to see.
