I have written here about George Ritchie, most recently when he died last year. A friend who subscribes to the Association for Research and Enlightenment’s Venture Inward magazine sent me this recent article by Sandra Martin, who for a while was my literary agent.

The book mentioned in this article, Ordered to Return, we originally published under the title My Life After Dying. It is still in print, and it is very much worth reading. Reading the manuscript changed my life right away, and was the beginning of many changes still in progress. It may well do the same for you.

I will always think of Russell Targ fondly as the man who made it possible for a while for me to fulfill, in a small way, one of my dreams. As it happened, he had the same dream. We wanted to bring back into print classic books that investigated psychic phenomena from a scientific point of view. The hope, of course, was that some people who only talk “scientific” might be reached through such books in a way they could never be reached by someone speaking “psychic.”
Together we published eleven books in what we called the Studies in Consciousness series, Russell picking the titles. The eleven books shared a classy cover design created especially for the series. (It has been a disappointment to me that the series did not meet enough commercial success to warrant continuing, for there are some very good books there.)
But long before I met Russell, I knew his name as part of Puthoff-and-Targ, always said just that way.

For all of you eagerly anticipating Hampton Roads Publishing’s upcoming Fall 2008 season, I just finished posting all of the new books in our bookstore. You can browse through and take a look at some of the exciting things we have in store. It is going to be a big season for us, with the addition of two world famous authors to our growing family, Eckhart Tolle and Newt Gingrich.
Eckhart Tolle, one of Oprah’s new favorites, is bringing his powerful message of the Power of Now to a whole new audience–children–with Milton’s Secret. Along with one of Hampton Roads’ co-founders, Robert S. Friedman, he has written a beautiful parable on enlightenment and happiness specifically for young readers. Any fan of The Power of Now or A New Earth will recognize Tolle’s message in the adventures and lessons learned by young Milton. With gorgeous illustrations by Frank Riccio, this will be wonderful addition to any family’s library, as well as a useful teaching tool. Hampton Roads is proud to be a part of the phenomenon that is Eckhart Tolle’s message of living in the now, and we hope you and  your family will enjoy Milton’s Secret.
We are just as excited about Newt Gingrich and his daughter, Jackie Gingrich Cushman, bringing their new travel guide to Hampton Roads. Inspired by Newt’s Rediscovering God in America, In God We Trust, continues on with his search for God in the capital of the United States, but in an easy-to-follow tour book. Each chaper focuses on a particular national historic treasure in Washington, DC, providing visitor information on the sites, as well as beautiful photographs and a tri-fold map. You will be able to tour DC with a new insight into the Founding Fathers’ plan for our great country. Again, another great addition for a family’s book collection.
Of course, there are lots more books I want to tell you about, but please check out the new season up in the bookstore now.

It was 1993 sometime, can’t remember when exactly, that Joe McMoneagle and his wife Nancy (Scooter) came down to visit our palatial establishment, which was then in Norfolk. Joe had a manuscript and was looking for a publisher, and he knew we were interested, so he came down to look us over from a prospective-author-and-publisher point of view.
Bob Friedman and I knew Joe McMoneagle because we had met him in his capacity as Bob Monroe’s stepson-in-law (if there is such a word). In 1989 Bob and I had gone up to the Monroe Institute, in Nelson County, to try to do some business, and had gone again in 1990, and then we had taken the Gateway Voyage in December, 1992, and had heard Joe speak to the group about remote viewing and his own experiences.
My own experiences at Gateway had been so profound, so life-changing, that I had made a silent resolution to publish anything Monroe-connected that came our way. My own experience with an attempt at remote viewing is described in my book Muddy Tracks (which largely centers on my experiences in various Monroe programs). It got my attention.

For those of you out there wanting to know some more information on Book Expo America, it is the largest annual publishing convention in the United States. This year the location happens to be in Los Angeles, from May 29 to June 1, www.bookexpoamerica.com. Last year over 37,000 registered attendees made it to New York City for BEA.
Hampton Roads will have a number of our authors attending and I will post the schedule as we near the events.

This is my first post for the Insights blog and I am really excited to be joining Frank in contributing publishing news and other fun tidbits about Hampton Roads Publishing. It has been a busy couple of months around here, from finalizing the Fall 2008 list to printing the catalog and sales kits to preparing for the Book Expo in Los Angeles at the end of the month. But in the end, we have some great new books coming up and our sales materials are out the door. It will be an adventure to present these new books at BEA and see what kind of response we get.
Hampton Roads will have book signings in the autographing area with Marla Martenson, author of Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting, Dr. Lisa Love, author of Beyond the Secret, Lee Jampolsky, author of Smile for No Good Reason, and Russell Targ, author of Do You See What I See?. In addition, we will have authors dropping by our booth (#747–come see us!) and plenty of give-aways. Our books are on the way to L.A. as I type and soon enough, our staff will be flying across the country to bring the latest Hampton Roads titles to the rest of the publishing world. I can’t wait!

It was the damnedest manuscript. In some ways it was the hardest job I ever did as editor. In some ways, too, the most rewarding.
This doorstop-thick manuscript was chock-full of valuable information, obviously acquired first-hand, obviously deeply thought through, obviously a gold mine for anyone interested in learning the art of astral projection not merely as an academic exercise but as a practical skill. The only trouble was, it wasn’t all that readable. Author Robert Bruce knew his material inside and out, but writing was not his thing. This was a job for superman! Or at least, super-editor.

It was a Wednesday early in 1996. My friend Ed Carter was at The Monroe Institute taking one of their weeklong residential courses, and he called me at work, suggesting that I come down there Friday morning for breakfast, as there was someone I ought to meet.
Ed had invested in Hampton Roads a few years previously, and, at his request, we had had a few business cards printed up for him listing him as Vice President for Development. In his spare time during the program, he had been functioning in that capacity. That is, he had gotten into a conversation with a fellow engineer, a tall thin guy from Colorado named Bruce Moen.
