The Death of the Mythic God
by: Jim Marion

The ancient world believed God to be a physical being who lived high above the stars in heaven while watching over his kingdom. Heaven was a physical place, often pictured aloft in the clouds, where the pious went for an infinite duration of time after they died. Hell was far below the "flat" earth where the sinners would suffer in flaming pits for all eternity. Let's face it the times have changed. Astronomy has done away with any notion of a physical heaven, Science has rid us of the concept of a hell beneath the "flat" earth, and theories of evolution have negated the Christian "creation" model. The myth that once dominated religion is no longer viable.

As we recognize the changing of the times, and the death of the old-world God, we find ourselves in a profound spiritual crisis. But despite dwindling church attendance, the pain of war and terrorism has led to an influx of people seeking an authentic spiritual path. According to Jim Marion, a former monk and author of the new book The Death of the Mythic God, it is not God who has died but only a particular conception of God (albeit a conception that had prevailed for about 3,000 years). Those in search of a religious awakening or a new connection to God are in pursuit of something that speaks to the modern spiritual seeker, and the old-world myth that so heavily shaped the beliefs of previous generations is no longer relevant. Marion provides this new breed of seeker with a roadmap for navigating the post-religion future.
