We Can't Stop Ourselves

We all have behaviors that we"d like to quit. Some people struggle with life threatening addictions to gambling, drugs, or alcohol, while others just need to quit biting their nails. And no matter how hard we try, we just can’t stop ourselves. In her new book How to Stop Screwing Up: 12 Steps to a Real Life and a Pretty Good Time, NPR reporter Martha Woodroof says that the 12 steps designed to beat addiction can help us all, no matter what is at stake.

Take an Honest Look

The key to changing our behavior, says Martha, is honesty. Nobody's perfect, and How to Stop Screwing Up embraces that concept, encouraging us to take an honest look at ourselves, imperfections and all. It is only through recognizing our flaws, and realizing the influence they have on how we act, that we can take control of our lives. By viewing ourselves and our goals honestly, we can recognize the steps to take to get what we want. By sharing the successes and failures that she experienced during her own application of the 12 steps in How to Stop Screwing Up, Martha encourages readers to have an honest discussion with themselves about what they’re doing, why they want to stop, and what they need to do.

Martha’s not a guru. And don't look to her as an expert with all of the answers. But in her time as a radio broadcaster, television talk show host, and restaurateur, she has had plenty of time to learn from her own mistakes.  She shares those mistakes in How to Stop Screwing Up and, with her own quirky wit and self-deprecating humor, shows us how to apply the 12 steps to living a real life.

Martha Woodroof’s How to Stop Screwing Up: 12 Steps to a Real Life and a Pretty Good Time shows everyone, from sex addicts to serial procrastinators, how to get beyond bad habits to get what we want.
