Dreaming While Awake
Techniques for 24-Hour Lucid Dreaming
by: Arnold Mindell, Ph.D.

Dreaming is the basis of human consciousness; we do it all day, every day. Subtle signs of particular meaning that we tend to miss, ignore, or misinterpret during waking hours become the seed of our night dreams. In his new book Dreaming While Awake: Techniques for 24-Hour Lucid Dreaming, Dr. Arnold Mindell asserts that in order to utilize the power of dreaming, we must notice these clues before they unfold and become differentiated into the ideas and emotions that occur in night dreams. Mindell takes the concept of lucid dreaming—waking up during a sleeping dream to consciously interact with the dream symbols—to a new level: dreaming twenty-four hours a day.

“…Dreaming happens all day long in our subtle experiences, which are almost too quick to catch, are irrational and dreamlike, and are difficult to formulate. Dreaming happens all the time, just before new thoughts and actions arise.”

The book’s purpose, says Mindell, is “to make the dreaming roots of reality so accessible, so visceral, that your conscious mind will give you back your right to dream.” He takes his inspiration from conversations with Australian Aborigines on the subject of the dreaming. Mindell connects dreaming with quantum physics, psychology, and Buddhism, and then applies his principles to all aspects of life from our own psychological world to that of large groups in conflict, as well as in relationships, bodywork, addictions, and illness (as in our relationship to our illness and our body). Further, he shows how this form of constant awareness, or lucidity can be used for divination, to “see” what’s going to happen next before it happens—“sensing the hidden future.”

Using examples from his own life as well as those from his workshops, Mindell shows us how to apply his principles in insightful and life-changing ways. Dreaming While Awake moves beyond simple dream interpretation and explains how to “move through and behind the world of everyday life, exploring the world of healing, divination, and immortality.”
